UPEACE Africa Regional programme celebrates 20 years of consistent achievements in Peacebuilding and development through capacity building of Africa Regional organizations, sub-regional Organizations, National Governments and International and local Non-Governmental Organizations

The UPEACE Africa Regional Programme, headquartered in Addis Ababa, supports peace in Africa as part of the University’s mission. Through active collaborations with over 30 universities, the programme engages in teaching, research, publications, and community outreach, which has significantly contributed to strengthening the efforts of regional organisations and national governments in Africa through capacity-building initiatives.

The Africa Regional programme which was established in 2002 in Geneva and moved to Africa Diplomatic Capital of Addis Ababa in 2005 is charged with the mission of strengthening the capacity of African Regional, sub-regional and national governments as well as universities and research institutes to lessen the obstacles to peace and development in the continent

During the first 10 years of its existence (2005-2015) the Africa Regional programme carried out more than 60 short certificate courses with over 1500 trainees and undertook curriculum review for universities offering courses in peace studies and published about 30 books which were distributed throughout the continent.

With the support of the Canadian International Development Research Centre UPEACE Africa provided scholarship to 56 doctoral students enrolled at 28 Universities across Africa. Today those UPEACE/IDRC beneficiaries form the core of UPEACE Africa visiting Professors.

In 2016 UPEACE Africa Regional Programme  started implementing academic programmes at the Certificate, Diploma, Masters and Doctoral levels on courses specifically developed to tackle Africa’s teething conflict challenges.

Today the programme runs monthly short certificate courses, 7 Masters degree programmes and 4 doctoral degree programmes..

UPEACE Africa has also taken the giant step of expanding geographically. In  2016 UPEACE Africa inaugurated the Uganda programme, In 2021, UPEACE Africa inaugurated its largest country programme in Somalia as well as Kenya and Senegal programme. Today UPEACE Africa collaborates with over 30 institutions in the areas of research, training and publications.

Please join UPEACE Africa Regional programme through its numerous academic programmes and contribute to achieving Africa’s vision 2063 – “The Africa We want”
